Equipped with a degree in Master of Arts (MA) from Monash University, Australia in 2002 and Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, the United States in 1998, Dessy Kania began her career as an advertising practitioner in one of the global advertising agencies in Jakarta. She was delegated to manage and supervise one of the largest telecommunications client in Indonesia; PT. Telkomsel.

 

Her goal to become a lecturer in higher education has rooted since she was still studying in college. Her career as an academic began started when she joined Universitas Pelita Harapan (Karawaci-Tangerang) in 2005. As a one of the communication faculty member, Dessy enjoyed teaching subjects such as: Marketing Communication, Advertising and Consumer Behavior. After 2 years in joining UPH, Dessy was trusted to become the Chairperson of the Department of Communication Studies.

After nearly five years of joining UPH, Dessy Kania then joined Universitas Bakrie and elected as the Head of Communication Studies Program until 2012. In Universitas Bakrie, Dessy teach courses in communications, such as Mass communication, psychology of communication, introduction to communication studies, organizational communications, public relations, radio/television broadcasting, and journalism.

Alongside of her teaching duties, Dessy has participated and contributed highly in research and presented papers in national and international conferences especially in topics such as: new media, mass media, culture and media, gender and media, gender and communication organization, advertising, consumer behavior and integrated marketing communication.

In addition to teaching and research, Dessy also actively involved in community services in teaching high school graduate in rural areas for job interviewing skills, leadership skills and public relations skills for high school teachers.
